Fire at Cabot Junior High North
After one of Cabot's Junior High Schools burned down, roughly two week before school began, I was involved in efforts to get the faculty and staff ready for the new school year as soon as possible. One part of this was setting up computers, office supplies, and ten printers for the administration faculty. I also helped to set up furniture in the new classroom trailers they used for the 2006-2007 school year.
Extended Learning Opportunities
During my sophomore year in High School I was involved in a program called Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO). In this program students attended an hour long tutoring session where we taught things such as Literacy, Math, Writing Instruction, and Technology. I worked with a science teacher, and good friend, during this program. It was a really great experience. I participated in setting up labs and explaining ideas and concepts to the students, as well as setting up technology for future use in the classroom.
Service Learning
One of the courses offered at Cabot High School is called Service Learning. In this program students log 75 hours of service at a school-approved site durring a semester, which is equal to 1/2 of an elective credit. The idea behind service learning is for students to be able to learn through first hand experience. The first semester that I participated in this program I worked at the Central Administrative Offices with Ms. Helen Teffer where I worked with computers and a variety of software.
In my second semester of service learning I am working with the Curriculum Department in order to make a new website. While working with them I have been doing a lot of study over web development programs, photo editing, and video editing. By the end of the 2006-2007 school year teachers will be able to link to videos of a 'Model Classroom,' where can can find valuable ideas on teaching strategies. The new site will also be a great took for parents and students who want to see what is going on in the school district. Included will be a color coded calendar, video and audio files for teachers, and much more.
Video Editing
During the summer of my Junior year I worked to transfer the VHS Japanese Lessons that my High School's Japanese Class uses to DVD format. I was able to add menus, making navigation to specific lessons easier, as well as improve the video and audio quality. This has allowed the Japanese Teacher to have a classroom set and an extra set to loan out to students, without having to worry about the tapes being lost or damaged.
In the 2006 school year I also set up a feature that allows her to switch between a VCR, DVD, or her computer by the simple click of a button. It's been a great tool to use for pulling up pictures to explain ideas and concepts, and also for presentations.
